Southwest Sawyers is based in and currently concentrated on the Phoenix metro area's wildland-urban interface — Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Mesa, Carefree, Cave Creek, Gold Canyon, Apache Junction, Globe, and Superior. That's where our crews work every week, and it's where we're focused right now. But our mission was never just the Valley. Our goal is to protect homes across all of Arizona, and Northern Arizona's high-country communities are exactly the kind of wildland-urban interface we exist to serve.
These communities sit inside Ponderosa pine and mixed-conifer forest — a completely different fuel type than the Sonoran Desert brush we clear in the Valley, but arguably an even more dangerous one. Dense timber stands, heavy dead-and-down fuel, and steep terrain mean fires in this region can move fast and burn hot, and entire subdivisions are built directly into the forest with little to no defensible space between the tree line and the roofline.
Payson and the surrounding Mogollon Rim communities sit at the base of one of the most fire-prone escarpments in the Southwest. Rim Country has a long history of large, fast-moving forest fires, and homes built into the pines here carry serious ember and crown-fire exposure during dry, windy conditions.
Prescott's mix of chaparral and interior forest, combined with rapid residential growth into the surrounding hills, has made it one of the fastest-growing wildland-urban interface zones in Arizona. Neighborhoods built into Prescott National Forest face year-round fire risk driven by dense brush and beetle-killed timber.
Flagstaff sits inside the largest contiguous Ponderosa pine forest in the world. Decades of fire suppression have left heavy fuel loads throughout Coconino National Forest, and neighborhoods on the city's edges back directly into dense timber with minimal defensible space.
Show Low and the surrounding White Mountains communities were directly touched by the 2002 Rodeo-Chediski Fire, one of the largest wildfires in Arizona history at the time. That history reshaped how seriously this region takes defensible space — and it's exactly the kind of terrain our crews are trained to work in.
OUR PLAN FOR NORTHERN ARIZONA
Wildfire mitigation principles don't change between the desert and the forest — defensible space zones, fuel reduction, ladder-fuel removal, and ember-resistant property design apply everywhere. What changes is the terrain and the fuel type, and that's a shift our crews are trained and equipped to make. As we grow our capacity beyond the Valley, Northern Arizona's high-risk WUI communities are the top priority for our next service area.
