Superior sits in the middle of a regional forest system that has already produced two of Arizona's most significant wildfires. The Woodbury Fire burned approximately 123,875 acres in the Superstition Wilderness in 2019, and the Telegraph Fire burned more than 180,000 acres near Globe, Miami, and Claypool in 2021. Both fires burned within the broader Tonto National Forest system that surrounds this corridor — a clear signal of how exposed the area around Superior is to large wildland fires.
FIRE BEHAVIOR IN SUPERIOR
Steep terrain drives slope-driven fire spread, moving fire uphill fast and with more intensity. Dense vegetation in pockets, dry conditions during peak seasonal risk, and wind movement through the terrain all combine to create sustained fire exposure across Superior's older residential areas.
Around Apache Leap, the canyon walls and cliff faces funnel wind through narrow terrain, which can push fire uphill and across slopes faster than it would move on open ground. Properties tucked into these canyon pockets, or backing directly to forest and brush, sit closest to where that wind-and-terrain combination is strongest.
The biggest threat to homes is not always direct flame contact — it's ember ignition, where wind-driven embers land on or around structures and start fires.
